Back at 1 Market again after their Nyonya fair previously. This time round, 1 market launches another edition of its thematic fair with Eat-all-you-can Crab extravaganza. This September, crab aficionados will rub their hands with glee while enjoying free flow of local favorites such as Salted Egg Crab and Black Pepper Crab as well. These dishes follow Chef Wan's personal recipes which he spent years experimenting and perfecting.
The crab extravaganza features an abundance of crabs cooked in different ways. There are four themes: Asian wok-fried, cold seafood, salad and Japanese. While the cold seafood counter will display flower crab and snow king crab. The Crab extravaganza will be held from 1st September to 30 September 2015.
Bringing you through the following 8 types of crabs, first we had the Black Pepper Crab. The overall taste were rather decent while the crabs were slightly small, not much meat is presented.
Yet another asian wok-fried style, here is Chef Wan's rendition of Salted Egg Crab. The Salted Egg gravy were pretty good, could be more distinctive though. Best if it's soaked within the flesh.
Next we had the Crabmeat with Avocado Salad, chunks of crabmeat are tossed with avocado. The buttery texture of the fruit complements the crabmeat, a sweet and savoury kind of taste. Overall, I personally don't fancy this, felt that it didn't quite gel together as a whole.
The cold seafood counter with Flower crabs and Snow King crabs. Definitely prefer the cold counter where we are able to taste the freshness and sweetness of the meat.
To the Japanese style, here's the Softshell Crab Maki. This is one classic sushi and it's always a must-have for me whenever I'm dining in Japanese restaurants. The slightly salty taste of the crab is tempered by the sweetness of the rice. Overall, a decent yet satisfying dish though I wish lesser chili powder is used.
Another salad theme, Glass Noodle Crabmeat Salad with Lime Leaves. The subtle taste of the glass noodle is enlivened by the tang of the lime leaves. Something light to start off though the glass noodle could have been softer in this case. I was expecting some real crab meat in it, but it's actually slices of crab sticks.
The same goes to this dish, wish there were real crab meat since it's a Crab Extravaganza. Here's Oden Hotpot Soup with Crab Stick, the hotpot features crab sticks and a variety of fish cake and quail eggs in konbu soup base. Comfort food I would say, though nothing fantastic.
Some were slightly above average while others fell short of it. Despite hits and misses, the variety is consider extensive especially for a halal buffet. Besides the crab feast in the line, the international buffet spread features Japanese and other Southeast Asia cuisines as well. Do note that the crab extravaganza special is only available in the month of September, on top of the usual international buffet.
