Matchaya - All Things Matcha & Houjicha @ Icon Village

After operating their business online and appearing at various pop-up events for some time, home-grown brand Matchaya has now open it's physical store at Icon Village. The brand is founded by couple Kaelyn and Kevin, serve mainly Matcha & Houjicha desserts. However, the new store operates as a takeaway booth with a tiny standing area.

The extensive menu doesn't just limit to Matcha but also others like Houjicha, Yuzu, Kuromitsu etc. The menu include various types of Japanese sweets - such as Milk Tea, Macaron, Swiss Roll, Clear Tea, Brulee Toast and Soft Serve.

I have tried their Matcha and Houjicha latte previously and has since fell it love with the rich flavour. These are sourced exclusively from the Kyoto prefecture while the Kuromitsu is from Okinawa. As told, most of their ingredients for their teas are sourced from different parts of Japan.

We wanted to try the Brulee Toast $5.90 which comes in 2 flavours, Matcha and Houjicha. If you are indecisive like us, simply top up $0.80 to get half Matcha and Houjicha to $6.70. The homemade milk bread was pretty normal I would say, spread over with matcha and houjicha jam then topped with roasted sesame seeds. They were good, though it tasted like tau sar bun with a hint of cha.

Cha Cha Pop $8, a ice cream Popsicle collaboration between Neh Neh Pop and Matchaya. This stick of goodness is a pairing of Matcha and Houjicha. Matcha ice cream encased with Houjicha and matcha shell, with black molasses, toasted sesame and feuilletine. Love the overall combination, with different textures in one. Despite the hefty price tag for a stick of ice cream, I wouldn't mind paying for something good.

Hojicha Soft Serve $5.90 - The soft serve flavours are on a rotational basis with Matcha and Hojicha. Finally get my hands on this after two failed attempts. The soft serve boast a rich and distinctive hoji flavour.

The highly raved Houjicha soft serve was unfortunately sold out on the day of my visit, will definitely be back for it. Thus, we went ahead to try their roll cake which comes in 2 flavour too, Matcha and Houjicha. We had the Houjicha Roll $4.90 which is made up of Matcha sponge with Houjicha cream. The best of both world in one slice but regrettably, the matcha sponge cake was rather dry. With contender Tsujiri being nearby, I believe Singaporeans have more options in having Japanese sweet treats in the CBD area.
