Hong Kong 2014 Day 1 - Rainbow Hotel, Mak's Noodle, Australian Dairy

Hong Kong isn't an unfamiliar place to me, as this is probably my fifth time to the land of dim sum. You'll find that my 6D5N itinerary for this trip is probably the most relaxed one ever, reason being is I brought my parents along for this trip. So it's probably shopping, eating, sight-seeing and eat again.

We were booked on Singapore Airlines for direct flight to Hong Kong. There was a promotion going on and it's only SGD297 per person for a return ticket including 30kg baggage. It's hell cheap! And it's on A380 Airbus which has double deck but unfortunately it was sold out so we were back down.

Flight timing was pretty good, we got the 930am flight and touched down at 130pm; just nice for lunch and check-in to our hotel. My 4 hours flight wasn't that restless with meal and inflight entertainment on-board. For morning flight breakfast, we can choose one out of two meals in the menu. There were the chinese and western fare, bee hoon with honey pork and scrambled egg with harsh brown/sausage respectively.

Upon arriving at HKG International Airport, getting a local HK prepaid sim card with data is the first thing I do. We went to this telecom shop called IOIO to purchase a 7 days unlimited data prepaid for about 160HKD, which is about SGD25+. Making local calls is available as well.

Our accommodation for the next 5 nights will be at Rainbow Hotel in Jordan. From airport, take airport bus No. A21, travel time is approximately 45 mins and HK$33 for one adult. Then alight at the bus stop 'Nathan Hotel' (10 stops from airport) and it's within 2 mins walking distance to Rainbow Hotel.

We booked the deluxe room for about 23 sq feet, which is quite big considering the standard in Hong Kong. Price is pretty affordable too, about SGD130 per night but no breakfast is provided though it says there is when I booked on Expedia. Everything seems pretty good especially the location, many eateries are just across the road.

The only flaw I experienced is the non-sound proof walls as the rooms are quite close together. So when a group of PRC is back next door in the wee hours, it's like a market. Sigh I don't think I'll be back though.

After settling down, we crossed over the road via. the subway tunnel just outside the hotel.
Since we were already hungry, first stop - Mak's Noodle.

Mak Man Kee is no stranger in Hong Kong, and it's said to be Hong Kong's most famous wanton noodle. They have several branches in Hong Kong, but they're all under one family - Mak.
Menu is right on the table, note that you're to read downwards.

But no worries, English menu is available as well to cater to tourists.

Shrimp Wanton Noodle in Soup (HKD33) per bowl. The portion per bowl is rather small as you can see, but this wanton noodle is so damn gooooood.
The noodle is 'Q', flavourful broth and crunchy wanton.

Pork Dumpling Noodle in Soup (HKD35) - The filling in the pork dumplings are generous with huge chunk of well-marinated minced pork.

Some tips - dip your wanton or dumplings into the chilli given. It's not really very spicy and definitely enhance the taste. The best wanton noodle I had in HK till date, Mak's Noodle & Tsim Chai Kee.

How is a small bowl of wanton noodle filling right? So we proceed to Australian Dairy Co. for another round to check out the hype. Note that it's just two store away from Mak's. We were there late evening amd the queue is already forming, inside being fully packed.

This Cha Chaan Teng is known for their scrambled eggs, macaroni breakfast and steam milk curd.

We ordered the Macaroni Breakfast Set (HKD35) - which comes with tea, macaroni soup, butter toast and scrambled eggs. Macaroni soup were meh, very normal.

The toast was rather decent as well but the scrambled eggs were heavenly. It's fluffy and creamy. I don't think I can find such quality scrambled eggs in Singapore, partly because the eggs they used in HK is different. After awhile, it gets crowded and people start getting rowdy, so we quickly finish our meal and left.

After filling our tummies, we walked from Jordan to Mongkok along the stretch of shop houses. Headed over to temple street after but they weren't fully open yet since it's still early.

Turn right onto Jordan Road and then take another right onto Temple Street.

Heard the hype about this soft serve on cone in the vicinity of Mongkok, thus decided to buy for about HKD10. I'm so sorry to whoever says this is good, it's so milky I threw it away :(

There are several Tai Hing outlets all over in Hong Kong, oh they it in Singapore and Macau as well. Some says they've one of the best roast goose, soy chicken and roast pork in HK.

We weren't really hungry so we just ordered roast pork and some other dishes. I was amazed at how good the roast pork is, roasted to great standard.
Extra crispy on the skin and juicy on the meat.
Dip along with the mustard sauce given, ah I was blown away.

After that, we were supposed to go Little Bao at Central for some desserts but we were tired from the early flight. So we ended Day 1 pretty early, back to hotel and that's a wrap!

  5. Looks like you had a great little trip. I am planning to visit Hong Kong soon. I think I will definitely be taking guidance from your posts – particularly this one. Anyway, the only dream of visiting Hong Kong is going to turn into a reality is if I get my dissertation right. I have a Harvard Reference Generator tool open in the next tab. I hope I get it right though. Because this is my first time using this tool. Anyway, as soon as my semester finishes, I am flying to Hong Kong. By the way, I hope I get to try all these foods though.
