Old Bibik's Famous Peranakan Rendang @ MDIS Building (Halal)

Old Bibik's Peranakan Kitchen started out in 2012 as a food stall at the former Lavender Food Square. Spoke to owner Adrian Loh that in the beginning, there were only chicken, beef and mutton rendang set meals. The recipes were honed from Adrian's mother, which was passed down from his grandmother. The idea behind Old Bibik now is to package traditional Nyonya dishes in a fast food concept at wallet friendly prices.

Since the transition to a bigger space in 2014, they have expanded the menu to include traditional favorites such as the Ayam Buah Keluak, Udang Nenas Masak Lemak, Mak Bibik Tengiri and more. The cooking style leans more to Penang based with greater emphasis on the use of tamarind, shallots, soya sauce etc.

We started the meal with Udang Nenas Masak Lemak $15, stir fried prawns with pineapple curry, coconut milk and various spices. The prawns were fresh and the unique pineapple curry is best accompanied with rice. It reminds me the taste of home.

A good example of never judge a book by its cover. Not the best looking dish here but it's one of our favorite, here's Ayam Buah Keluak $12. Chicken braised in light curry cooked with keluak nuts to give an intense bittersweet flavour. This is best paired with rice, can have multiples of it.

A unique peranakan dish that I have never try before. Here's Ju Hu Cha $10, an old Penang Peranakan recipe - shredded turnip slow cooked with an assortment of vegetables and dried cuttlefish. It is best consume with the lettuce wrapped in turnip. Being a popiah lover, I personally love this.

Next we have is Old Bibik's signature Beef Rendang $9/$16, braised beef is slow cooked for hours till tender in their special rempah sauce. The beef chunks were soft and tender, accompanied with the rich rempah sauce, this is pretty addictive. I can finish all of this with a bowl of white rice :p

Sambal Egg $1.50/ Egg -  Hardboiled egg cooked in Old Bibik's in-house sambal sauce. They key thing here is the sambal, this fiery sauce was rich in flavour and spicy. One word to describe it: Shiok!

Last plate here among the 7 dish served, here's Mak Bibik Tengiri $15. A crowd pleasing dish, deep fried batang fish with their special Mak Bibik soya sauce. Other than meat and seafood, Old Bibik served deep fried tengiri too, which is best paired with rice.

We ended off the meal with a familiar dish, Goreng Pisang. Banana deep fried in crispy batter served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Such classic sweets can't easily go wrong, love it.

There is no GST or service charge levied for dining at Old Bibik's Peranakan Kitchen. They are also one of the few Halal certified Nyonya restaurants in Singapore. Set meals are available as well ranging from $6.90-$11.90, which include a main, steamed rice, achar, soup and sambal chilli. Old Bibik easily topped my list of good and affordable peranakan food.
