A for Arbite - 28 Aliwal Street, Singapore

A for Arbite is a spacious and minimalist 64-seater restaurant, which focused on quality dining while making sure diners get value for money. This is also the sister branch to the popular brunch spot Arbite in Serangoon Gardens. Chef-owner Marc Wee has expanded his menu options where he did a western and local fare fusion.

Marc carries over his signature handmade Arbite pastas here as they prepared from scratch. Beers & alcoholic beverages are available as well & you’ll be able to savour some interesting combinations featuring some of Arbite signatures such as XO Lobster Pasta, Adobo Pork Ribs and many more. And serving Tiong Hoe Specialty coffee beans.

The space that A for Arbite is currently at now, was previously a classroom. Was told by Marc that they're having the classroom concept such as the chalkboard in remembrance of the school.

The expanded menu which has more innovative dishes - full menu here.

Steakhouse Fries - Buah Keluak dip with chilli salt ($12) - Buah keluak is basically a dark brown-to-black nut, it is an essential ingredient in chicken or pork buah keluak, a mainstay of Peranakan cuisine. After this, I've learnt what Buah Keluak is and was surprised that it goes well with the chilli salt fries. A for Arbite serves crispy thick cut fries, you might like it if you're a fan of thick fries.

Laksa Salad ($15) - The dish name says it all. There were curry leaves, prawns, squid, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, mesclun greens, coconut and chilli vinaigrette. Overall, it was something unique but the laksa taste was lacking. And for 15 bucks, it's probably a No for me.

Duck Roll ($12) - Duck rillettes, smoked duck breast, dried mushrooms, water chestnuts, grapes and chilli gastrique. Wrapped in ngong hiang crispy skin, I was 'Wow' by this. I like the idea of water chestnuts and grapes, making it savory-sweet and crunchy. Thumbs up.

Adobo Pork Ribs ($20) - Pork ribs braised in soy and vinegar, served with glutinous rice balls stuffed with serunding (coconut) and seasonal greens. The seasoning to the ribs were delish, the meat was tender as it slip off from the bone easily. The rice balls wasn't to my liking though.

Salted Egg Crab Pasta ($24) - Zita pasta, salted egg, crab meat, chilli, deep fried soft shell crab and curry leave oil. One of my favorite mains here, very successful fusion of local and western fare. Overall, it was really good though the salted egg flavor could be richer. The soft shell crab on the other hand was the bomb, crispy, moist and flavorful. It got me 'Wow' at my first bite.

XO Lobster Pasta ($34) - Squid ink tagliolinni, half Boston lobster, mushrooms, goma sauce and 'xo' chilli. This is A for Arbite signature and most popular dish. I was impressed at how well the xo work together with the pasta, simply amazing. Note that you can inform the staff at the level of spiciness you prefer, or it would be quite spicy for some.

Lobsters used to be expensive as what everyone would say in the past but today, restaurants are offering lobsters at affordable prices where it is commonly seen across the tables.

Salmon Florentine ($16) - Smoked salmon, poached eggs, cream spinach, burnt butter hollandaise and fresh greens. And your choice of Thosai (rice and semolina crepe) or herbed foccacia. Interesting dish while pairing egg Benny in the crepe. I like how dried shrimp is added to enhance the taste, but the smoked salmon wise was really salty.

Having desserts is the best way to end your meal. There were 6 sweets selection on the menu, we were stoked to try them out.

My Wife's Chocolate Cake ($8) - Served with a scoop of salted caramel ice cream and coffee soil. It tasted good, moist and sweet but nothing impressive though. Would vote for sticky pudding!

Edith's Mess ($8) - Passionfruit jelly, honey comb, fresh berries and rock melon ice cream. I was quite amazed how well this is when put together. Passionfruit was rich and soft with home made rock melon ice cream which was quite well done. My favourite thing about this dish - honey combs! We didn't even struggle to finish it though we were already full from all the dishes.

A for Arbite has a big dining area with up to 64 seating capacity at Aliwal Street. If you're looking for a space to celebrate birthday or any small event, do include A for Arbite in the list. They offer catering services to events as well, do give them a call for more details.

If the dishes I mentioned above has lure your appetite, do check out A for Arbite. Great place to grab some awesome small bites to share and big bites for feasting. The mains are relatively generous in portion, so definitely a great place for sharing! They are constantly having chef's specials, beer of the month and even 1-for-1 drinks. Cheers' to good food!
