Totoro Cream Puffs - Shirohige's Cream Puff Factory, Tokyo

It's probably my third time to Japan and it's only during my recent trip to Tokyo, I came up with a list of cafes to go and the Totoro themed cafe is definitely one of them. I got to say that food by the Japanese is easily some of the most beautiful looking food on earth, and these totoro cream puffs are no exception either.

After a 5-mins walk from Setagaya-Daita Station, we were greeted with a laid-back stall front with bicycles and tree stumps outside. Seems like there are two concepts here; Shirohige's Cream Puff Factory being on the first floor is for takeaway while the second floor is for dine-in customers. The second floor actually belongs to Tolo Coffee & Bakery where they serves coffee and mains like pasta, and you can order the totoro cream puffs from below as well.

It was a cold and rainy weather during my day of visit but we still choose to sit outdoor, overlooking a nice greenery nature. We were mainly here for the totoro cream puffs so we went straight for desserts. :P

There were 4 different cream puffs flavour (¥400-¥440 each): chocolate, custard, strawberry and salted caramel banana, the last two were their seasonal flavours. Sad that their matcha flavour wasn't available during my visit, so we had the seasonal flavours and ordered two drinks. Note that each diner is expected to order a drink when dining in.

Took us awhile to finally start eating them because camera first :P The custard cream in each puff is light and refreshing. Honestly, I wasn't expecting much in gimmicky food like this even though I'm in Japan but damn, I was pleasantly surprised that these babies not only look pretty but taste good too. While the drinks on the other hand were rather decent, we had hot chocolate and matcha latte. Overall, love the laid-back ambience and I could sit here all day.

Detailed directions to Shirohige's Cream Puff Factory:

Take the Odakyu railway to Setagaya-Daita Station on the Odawara line. The above photo is the direction you will see after you turn right upon exiting the metro station, Lawson will be on your right. Continue walking straight and you will need to turn right after you see a tatami shop as instructed by the station officer.

But it was abit confusing because the tatami shop is further up on the right alley and not too visible. So I would suggest looking out for Glaubelll coffee instead, and above is the alley you need to turn right into. After that, just continue walking straight for about 100m or so and you will see the cafe.

This is the store front of Shirohige's Cream Puff Factory, it is a small and cosy cafe of 2 storeys. Level 1 is for takeaway so if you're dining in, you can order the totoro cream puffs upstairs too. Although the totoro cream puffs were pretty decent, I would still recommend to visit this beautiful space at least once.
