Nagi Golden-gai (ラーメン凪) Ramen Shinjuku, Tokyo

Visited Japan recently and we were on an adventure to hunt for some best ramen in Tokyo. We researched and discovered Nagi Ramen serves great ramen in dried sardine broth. Nagi ramen chain has a few stores in Tokyo and we went to the most popular joint located in the vicinity of Shinjuku.

Located on the second floor of wooden shop houses, the branch at Shinjuku is really cramped with limited counter seat capacity. We arrived at 11 pm for supper and there's a queue till the back alley. Thankfully, we waited less than 30 mins. I've to say the Japanese are really efficient.

Take note: Get your order via. the vending machine upstairs first before queuing up. It's all in Japanese words but no worries, English menu is available upon request.

We ordered the 'Special Ramen' at 900yen as recommended by the friendly staff as their signature ramen. The ramen noodle at Nagi are futomen (thick noodles), the chewy curl noodles clings well with the rich sardine broth. The fishy taste can be a little strong for some people but it's just nice for my liking. Definitely something different from the usual Tonkotsu soup based.

The "Special Ramen" comes with slices of tender pork char siew, dried seaweed, perfectly cooked soft boiled egg and chopped scallions. The broth is so good that you probably forgotten your uncomfortable cramped space.

Nagi specialty is their flavorful sardine broth - a huge amount of dried sardine are boiled for 12 hours to get that rich and creamy soup.

If you fancy something different, check out Nagi for their dried sardine broth ramen. There are open daily round the clock, making it so much easier should hunger strikes in wee hours!
